Step 1: The model I made to maintain accurate proportions.
Step 2: Use the models to get accurate lighting for the scene they’re in. Here, I’m bouncing on the trampoline!
Step 3: I edit the render directly in Krita using various digital brushes to make the lighting match how I picture added details like my hair, clothes, etc
Step 4: The fun part! I illustrate the scene with the edited render as a background layer.

Phase #2

I knew I wanted to recreate spaces that were important to me, but as I thought back on my past, I realized that every important childhood memory I could think of was with my brother. I decided to make the book a series of tableaus featuring the two of us as little kids.

Once I began illustrating, I quickly realized that I needed a way to keep our proportions consistent across every scene. I turned to Blender to make rough reference models. Blender also gave me the added advantage of realistic lighting across pages- shadows from one page can cast onto the other.
